Where Your Money Goes

The Massachusetts Paycheck Calculator computes payroll amounts by converting pay inputs, tax configuration selections, benefit deductions, and statutory constants into numerical paycheck outputs. The calculator processes salary-based or hourly-based earnings, applies federal income tax rules by selected tax year, applies Massachusetts state income tax rules, calculates FICA taxes, applies Massachusetts PFML deductions, and subtracts defined pre-tax benefits. Outputs are produced on a per-pay-period basis with optional annualized views. All calculations are performed using fixed rates, thresholds, caps, and conditional branches defined directly in the calculation logic.

Inputs Used by the Massachusetts Paycheck Calculator

Pay Mode: Determines whether gross pay is entered directly per pay period (salary mode) or derived from hourly rate, regular hours, and overtime hours (hourly mode).

Pay Frequency: Integer representing the number of pay periods per year. Supported values are 52, 26, 24, 12, and 1. This value is used to annualize per-period values and de-annualize annual results.

Filing Status: Federal and Massachusetts filing status selection. Supported values are single/head of household and married filing jointly. This selection determines standard deductions, tax brackets, exemption values, and surtax thresholds.

Tax Year: Selects which federal tax bracket table and standard deduction set is applied. Supported values are 2025 and 2026 (projected).

Gross Pay (Per Pay Period): Dollar amount of gross earnings per pay period in salary mode.

Hourly Rate: Dollar amount paid per hour in hourly mode.

Regular Hours: Number of non-overtime hours worked in the pay period.

Overtime Hours: Number of overtime hours worked in the pay period. Overtime pay is calculated at 1.5 times the hourly rate.

Snow / Irregular Overtime Flag: Boolean input that separates overtime pay into a supplemental income category for federal flat-rate withholding.

Bonus / Extra Pay: Additional dollar amount added to gross pay per period.

Flat Bonus Tax Mode: Boolean input that causes bonus income to be taxed at a flat federal rate rather than through progressive brackets.

Target Net Pay: Optional numeric value used only to trigger a display alert when calculated net pay is below the entered amount.

Pre-Tax Transit Amount: Dollar amount deducted per pay period before federal and Massachusetts income tax.

Pre-Tax Parking Amount: Dollar amount deducted per pay period before federal and Massachusetts income tax.

Health Insurance Premium: Dollar amount deducted per pay period as a pre-tax health deduction.

HSA Contribution: Dollar amount deducted per pay period as a Section 125 pre-tax contribution.

401(k) Contribution Percentage: Percentage of gross pay contributed to a 401(k). The calculated amount is capped annually at a fixed IRS limit.

M-4 Personal Exemptions: Integer count of Massachusetts personal exemptions.

Dependents (M-4 Line 4): Integer count of dependents used to compute additional Massachusetts exemption amounts.

PFML Employer-Paid Flag: Boolean input that determines whether the employee PFML deduction is applied.

Monthly Bills Inputs: Rent, utilities, and loan amounts used only for a post-payroll budget comparison display.

How the Massachusetts Paycheck Calculator Works

Gross pay per period is determined first. In salary mode, gross pay equals the entered gross amount. In hourly mode, gross pay equals hourly rate multiplied by regular hours, plus overtime hours multiplied by 1.5 times the hourly rate. Bonus or extra income is added to gross pay per period. Annual gross income is calculated by multiplying total per-period gross by pay frequency.

Pre-tax benefit deductions are calculated next. Transit, parking, health insurance, and HSA amounts are summed. A 401(k) contribution is calculated as a percentage of gross pay and is limited by a fixed annual IRS cap.

Taxable income bases are then derived. The federal and Massachusetts income tax base excludes all pre-tax benefits and 401(k) contributions. The FICA base excludes transit, parking, and HSA amounts but includes health insurance.

Federal income tax is calculated using progressive brackets selected by tax year and filing status after subtracting the applicable standard deduction. If supplemental income flags are enabled, overtime or bonus amounts are removed from the regular tax base and taxed at a flat federal rate. Annual federal tax is divided by pay frequency to obtain per-period withholding.

Social Security tax is calculated at a fixed rate applied to annual wages up to a fixed wage cap, then divided by pay frequency. Medicare tax is calculated using a base rate applied to all Medicare wages plus an additional surtax applied to wages above a fixed annual threshold.

Massachusetts taxable income is calculated by subtracting a fixed exemption amount and a capped Social Security deduction from annual Massachusetts wages. A flat Massachusetts tax rate is applied to the remaining taxable amount and divided by pay frequency.

Massachusetts PFML is calculated per pay period using a fixed rate applied to wages up to a capped per-period base. If the employer-paid flag is enabled, the PFML deduction is zero.

Total deductions equal the sum of federal tax, Social Security tax, Medicare tax, Massachusetts tax, PFML, pre-tax benefits, and 401(k) contributions. Net pay equals gross pay minus total deductions.

Results and Metrics Explained

Gross Pay: Total earnings per pay period before deductions.

Federal Income Tax: Per-period federal tax withholding derived from annualized taxable income and applicable brackets.

Social Security Tax: Per-period Social Security tax calculated from capped annual wages.

Medicare Tax: Per-period Medicare tax including any applicable additional surtax.

Massachusetts State Tax: Per-period Massachusetts income tax calculated using a flat rate.

PFML: Per-period Massachusetts Paid Family and Medical Leave employee contribution.

Pre-Tax Benefits: Sum of transit, parking, health insurance, and HSA deductions per period.

401(k) Contribution: Per-period retirement contribution subject to an annual cap.

Total Taxes: Sum of federal tax, Social Security tax, Medicare tax, Massachusetts tax, and PFML.

Net Pay: Gross pay per period minus all taxes and deductions.

Effective Rate: Ratio of total taxes to taxable wages after pre-tax deductions, expressed as a percentage.

Interpreting the Calculation Output

Higher gross pay values increase all proportional tax and deduction amounts. Increasing pre-tax deductions reduces taxable income bases used for income tax calculations. Higher pay frequency reduces per-period values while maintaining equivalent annual totals. Enabling supplemental income flags reallocates income between progressive and flat-rate calculations without changing gross income totals. Annual view multiplies per-period results by pay frequency.

Assumptions and Calculation Limits

Federal tax brackets and standard deductions are fixed for each tax year selection. Massachusetts income tax is applied at a constant rate. Social Security tax applies only up to a fixed annual wage cap. Medicare surtax applies above fixed income thresholds. 401(k) contributions are capped at a fixed annual IRS limit. PFML deductions are capped by a fixed wage base. Monthly bills calculations do not affect payroll results. No itemized deductions or local income taxes are applied.

Estimation Disclaimer

All results are numerical estimates produced using fixed formulas, constants, and conditional logic defined in the calculator code. The calculations do not account for factors outside the implemented rules. Actual payroll withholding amounts may differ from these estimates.
