| Frequency | Gross Pay | Total Tax | Net Pay |

The Louisiana Paycheck Calculator computes paycheck and annualized payroll values using user-provided income, pay frequency, filing status, exemption counts, and deduction parameters. The calculator converts these inputs into gross pay, taxable income, tax withholdings, deductions, and net pay using fixed formulas, rates, caps, and conditional logic defined in the code. Federal income tax, FICA taxes, and Louisiana state income tax are calculated on an annualized basis and allocated back to the selected pay period.
Inputs Used by the Louisiana Paycheck Calculator
Pay Mode
The calculator operates in Salary mode or Hourly mode. The selected mode determines how base gross pay is computed.
Pay Frequency
A numeric value representing pay periods per year: 52, 26, 24, 12, or 1. This value is used to annualize taxable income and divide annual results into per-period values.
Filing Status
Accepted values are single and married. This input controls federal tax brackets, federal standard deduction amounts, and Louisiana state tax bracket selection.
Gross Pay (Salary Mode)
A dollar amount representing gross pay for one pay period. If frequency equals 1, the value represents annual gross pay.
Hourly Rate
A dollar-per-hour value used in hourly mode.
Regular Hours
A numeric hour count multiplied by the hourly rate.
Overtime Hours
A numeric hour count multiplied by the hourly rate and a fixed overtime multiplier of 1.5.
Cash Tips
A dollar amount added to taxable income calculations only. Cash tips are not included in gross pay or net pay values.
Reported / Check Tips
A dollar amount added to gross pay and taxable income.
Bonus / Extra Income
A dollar amount added to gross pay per period.
Disaster / Hazard Pay Toggle
When enabled, extra income is taxed using a separate federal calculation path.
L-4 Personal Exemptions
An integer value (0–2). Each unit reduces Louisiana taxable income by a fixed amount.
Dependents
An integer value. Each dependent reduces Louisiana taxable income by a fixed amount.
401k / Other Pre-Tax (%)
A percentage applied to annual gross income to compute pre-tax deductions.
Public Retirement System
A fixed percentage applied to annual gross income as an additional pre-tax deduction.
Parish / Local Deduction
A fixed dollar amount deducted post-tax per pay period when enabled.
Other Post-Tax Deductions
A fixed dollar amount deducted per pay period after taxes.
How the Louisiana Paycheck Calculator Works
- Gross Pay Construction
- In salary mode, gross pay equals the entered gross pay value.
- In hourly mode, gross pay equals regular pay plus overtime pay plus reported tips.
- Cash tips are excluded from gross pay.
- Taxable Gross Determination
Taxable gross per pay period equals gross pay plus cash tips. This value is used exclusively as the tax base. - Annualization
Taxable gross per pay period is multiplied by pay frequency to determine annual taxable gross income. - Pre-Tax Deductions
Annual pre-tax deductions equal:- Annual gross × pre-tax deduction percentage
- Annual gross × public retirement rate
Annual taxable income equals annual gross minus these deductions.
- Federal Income Tax
Federal tax is calculated using filing-status-specific brackets and a fixed standard deduction.
When disaster pay is enabled, bonus income is separated and taxed at a flat 22% rate after pre-tax reductions. - FICA Taxes
- Social Security tax equals 6.2% of annual gross income, capped at 176,100.
- Medicare tax equals 1.45% of annual gross income with no cap.
- Louisiana State Income Tax
Louisiana taxable income is reduced by personal exemptions and dependents, then processed through progressive state brackets. - Per-Period Allocation
All annual tax values and deductions are divided by pay frequency to compute per-paycheck values. - Net Pay Calculation
Net pay equals gross pay per period minus:- Federal income tax
- Louisiana state income tax
- Social Security tax
- Medicare tax
- Pre-tax deductions
- Post-tax deductions

Medicare Tax
The per-period portion of the 1.45% Medicare tax.
Louisiana State Tax
The per-period portion of Louisiana income tax after exemption reductions.
Pre-Tax Deductions

Interpreting the Calculation Output
Higher taxable gross values numerically increase tax calculations. Higher pay frequency values distribute annual tax and income amounts across more periods, reducing per-period figures. Increasing exemption counts reduces Louisiana taxable income before state tax rates are applied. Net pay is numerically lower when tax liabilities increase relative to gross pay.
Assumptions and Calculation Limits
- Cash tips are taxed but excluded from gross and net pay values.
- Effective tax rate is calculated using taxable gross, not displayed gross pay.
- Filing status is limited to
singleandmarried; Head of Household is not implemented. - Federal tax brackets and standard deductions are fixed values.
- Social Security tax is capped at 176,100 annually.
- Overtime pay uses a fixed 1.5 multiplier.
- All calculations assume uniform income across pay periods.
Estimation Disclaimer
All results are numerical estimates derived from fixed rates, thresholds, and formulas defined in the calculation logic. Actual payroll outcomes may differ due to employer-specific withholding rules, regulatory changes, or additional tax adjustments not represented in the code.
