💡 Why your Missouri paycheck looks different
  • Local Earnings Tax: Residents or workers in Kansas City or St. Louis City pay an additional 1% tax on gross earnings.
  • State Tax: Missouri has a relatively low effective state tax rate (~4.8%) compared to national averages.
  • Retirement Exclusion: Missouri allows deductions for public pension and social security income, which can lower state withholding if you qualify.
  • Pre-Tax Deductions: Contributions to 401(k) and health insurance lower your taxable income for both Federal and State taxes.

The Missouri Paycheck Calculator computes paycheck-level and annualized payroll figures using deterministic formulas defined in the provided code. The Missouri Paycheck Calculator converts earnings inputs, pay frequency, filing status, Missouri-specific tax settings, and deduction values into gross pay, tax components, deductions, and net pay outputs. Calculations include federal income tax, Missouri state income tax, optional Missouri local earnings taxes, FICA taxes, and configurable pre-tax and post-tax deductions.

Inputs Used by the Missouri Paycheck Calculator

Pay Mode
A radio selection determines whether earnings are calculated using salary mode or hourly mode. This selection controls how annual gross pay is constructed.

Annual Gross Salary
A numeric dollar input representing total yearly earnings. Used only in salary mode and treated as the full annual gross pay amount.

Hourly Rate
A numeric dollar input representing earnings per hour. Used only in hourly mode.

Hours per Week
A numeric input defining regular weekly working hours. Multiplied by the hourly rate to calculate weekly regular earnings.

Overtime Hours per Week
A numeric input defining weekly overtime hours. Used only in hourly mode.

Overtime Multiplier
A selectable multiplier (1.5 or 2.0) applied to the hourly rate when calculating overtime earnings.

Pay Frequency
A numeric selection representing pay periods per year (52, 26, 24, 12, or 1). Used to convert annual values into per-paycheck values and to annualize per-paycheck inputs.

Filing Status
A selection of single, married filing jointly, or head of household. Used to determine federal standard deduction values and federal tax brackets.

401k / Pre-Tax Percentage
A percentage input applied to annual gross pay. The resulting amount is treated as a pre-tax deduction for both federal and Missouri state tax calculations.

Health Insurance (Per Paycheck)
A dollar input deducted once per paycheck after taxes.

Other Post-Tax Deductions
A dollar input deducted per paycheck after taxes.

Missouri Local Taxes
A selection defining whether a local earnings tax applies. Options include none, Kansas City (1%), St. Louis City (1%), or a custom percentage rate.

Custom Local Tax Rate
A numeric percentage input used only when the custom local tax option is selected.

Extra Missouri Withholding
A dollar input added to Missouri state tax withholding on a per-paycheck basis.

Missouri Deduction Method
A radio selection choosing either standard Missouri deductions or a custom Missouri deduction value.

Custom Missouri Deduction Value
A numeric annual dollar input used only when the custom Missouri deduction method is selected.

Retirement Exclusion Toggle
A checkbox applying a fixed $6,000 reduction to Missouri taxable income.

Employer Payroll Cost Toggle
A checkbox controlling the display of employer-paid Social Security and Medicare cost estimates.

How the Missouri Paycheck Calculator Works

The calculator first determines the selected pay mode.

In hourly mode, weekly regular earnings are calculated as the hourly rate multiplied by hours worked per week. Weekly overtime earnings are calculated as the hourly rate multiplied by overtime hours and the selected overtime multiplier. Weekly regular and overtime earnings are each annualized using a fixed 52-week factor. Annual gross pay equals annual regular earnings plus annual overtime earnings.

In salary mode, annual gross pay is taken directly from the annual gross salary input.

In hourly mode, annual gross pay already includes overtime earnings. Overtime pay is calculated and displayed separately for breakdown purposes only and is not added again to gross pay.

Annual gross pay is divided by the selected pay frequency to compute regular gross pay per paycheck. In hourly mode, the annualized regular portion and annualized overtime portion are each divided by pay frequency to produce separate per-paycheck regular and overtime amounts. The sum of these values equals gross pay per paycheck.

Pre-tax 401k deductions are calculated as a percentage of annual gross pay. This amount is subtracted from annual gross pay when determining taxable income for both federal and Missouri state taxes.

Federal taxable income equals annual gross pay minus annual pre-tax 401k deductions. A filing-status-specific federal standard deduction is applied, and progressive federal tax brackets defined in the code are used to compute annual federal income tax. Annual federal tax is divided by pay frequency to produce per-paycheck federal withholding.

Missouri state taxable income equals annual gross pay minus annual pre-tax 401k deductions, minus Missouri deductions, minus any retirement exclusion. Missouri deduction values are determined exclusively by the Missouri Deduction Method selection. Filing status does not affect Missouri deduction amounts unless the standard Missouri deduction option is selected, which applies fixed standard deduction constants defined in the code. If the custom deduction option is selected, the custom annual deduction value fully replaces the standard deduction.

If the retirement exclusion option is enabled, a fixed $6,000 amount is subtracted from Missouri taxable income. Missouri taxable income is multiplied by a flat 4.8 percent rate to compute annual Missouri state tax. Extra Missouri withholding entered per paycheck is multiplied by pay frequency and added to annual Missouri state tax before allocation back to the paycheck level.

Local earnings taxes are calculated by multiplying annual gross pay by the selected local tax rate. Local taxes are not reduced by deductions. The annual local tax amount is divided by pay frequency to determine per-paycheck local tax.

FICA taxes are calculated independently of deductions. Social Security tax equals 6.2 percent of annual gross pay up to a fixed wage cap. Medicare tax equals 1.45 percent of annual gross pay with no cap. Annual values are divided by pay frequency to determine per-paycheck withholding.

Net pay per paycheck equals gross pay per paycheck minus all per-paycheck taxes and minus all per-paycheck deductions. Net pay is constrained to a minimum value of zero.

Annual output values are calculated by multiplying per-paycheck values by the selected pay frequency.

Pre-Tax Deductions

Post-Tax Deductions
Amounts deducted after taxes, including health insurance and other deductions.

Net Pay

Interpreting the Calculation Output

Higher gross pay values increase all percentage-based tax components. Higher pre-tax deduction percentages reduce both federal and Missouri state taxable income. Changes in pay frequency alter per-paycheck values while keeping annual totals constant. Enabling local taxes increases total tax by a fixed proportion of gross pay. Extra Missouri withholding increases Missouri state tax without altering taxable income calculations.

Assumptions and Calculation Limits

Federal tax brackets and standard deductions use fixed estimated values defined in the code. Missouri state tax is calculated using a flat 4.8 percent rate with simplified deduction logic. The retirement exclusion is capped at a fixed $6,000 value. Social Security tax applies only up to a fixed annual wage cap, while Medicare tax has no cap. Local earnings taxes apply directly to gross pay without deductions. Net pay values are not allowed to be negative.

Estimation Disclaimer

All results are derived from fixed constants, estimated tax brackets, and simplified deduction logic implemented in the code. Actual payroll calculations may differ due to employer-specific withholding rules, benefit structures, or regulatory changes. The outputs represent numerical estimates rather than official payroll determinations.
