The Montana Paycheck Calculator helps you see your real take-home pay after federal, Montana state and FICA taxes. Calculate salary or hourly wages, handle overtime, seasonal work, public employee PERS, benefits and commuting costs in one clear paycheck breakdown.
The Montana Paycheck Calculator computes paycheck-level and annual payroll figures by converting earnings inputs, filing status, tax parameters, and deduction values into gross pay, tax amounts, deductions, and net pay. The Montana Paycheck Calculator supports salary-based and hourly-based income, applies federal income tax logic, Montana state income tax logic, FICA taxes, and optional adjustments defined in the calculation code. All outputs are produced using fixed constants, formulas, and conditions implemented in the calculator logic.
Inputs Used by the Montana Paycheck Calculator
Pay Mode: Determines whether earnings are calculated using salary mode or hourly mode. This selection controls how annual gross income is constructed.
Annual Gross Pay: Dollar value representing total yearly earnings before taxes and deductions. Used only when salary mode is selected.
Hourly Rate: Dollar amount paid per hour. Used only in hourly mode to calculate weekly earnings.
Hours Per Week: Number of regular hours worked per week. Multiplied by the hourly rate to calculate weekly regular earnings.
Overtime Hours Per Week: Number of overtime hours worked per week. These hours are assumed to occur every week and are multiplied by the hourly rate using a fixed 1.5 multiplier.
Pay Frequency: Number of pay periods per year (52, 26, 24, 12, or 1). Used to distribute annual gross pay, taxes, and deductions into per-paycheck values.
Filing Status: Filing category selected as single, married filing jointly, or head of household. Used to determine both federal and Montana standard deduction amounts and applicable tax brackets.
Federal/State W-4 Step 4(b) Deduction Amount: Annual dollar amount treated as an additional pre-tax deduction. This value reduces both federal and Montana taxable income.
401(k) Contribution Percentage: Percentage applied to tax base annual income. The calculated contribution is treated as a pre-tax deduction and reduces both federal and Montana taxable income.
Health Insurance (Per Paycheck): Dollar amount deducted each paycheck. Health insurance is treated as a pre-tax deduction and reduces both federal and Montana taxable income.
Post-Tax Deductions (Per Paycheck): Dollar amount deducted after all taxes are calculated.
Public Employee (PERS) Selection: Checkbox indicating participation in the Montana Public Employee Retirement System. When enabled, a fixed 7.9 percent contribution is applied to tax base annual income as a pre-tax deduction.
Seasonal Worker Selection: Checkbox indicating work is performed for fewer than 12 months per year.
Months Worked Per Year: Numeric value between 1 and 12 used only when seasonal worker mode is enabled. Determines the portion of annual income used for tax calculations.
Extra Withholding Amount (Per Paycheck): Dollar amount added to tax withholding each paycheck.
Extra Withholding Target: Selection indicating whether extra withholding is applied to federal tax or Montana state tax.
Daily Roundtrip Commute Miles: Number of miles traveled per workday. Used to estimate commute fuel cost using a fixed formula.
How the Montana Paycheck Calculator Works
The calculator first determines the selected pay mode.
In hourly mode, weekly earnings are calculated as the hourly rate multiplied by regular hours per week plus overtime hours multiplied by the hourly rate and a fixed 1.5 multiplier. Weekly earnings are multiplied by 52 to produce an annual gross rate.
In salary mode, the annual gross rate is taken directly from the annual gross pay input.
Per-paycheck gross pay is calculated by dividing the annual gross rate by the selected pay frequency.
If seasonal worker mode is enabled, the calculator computes a tax base annual income by multiplying the annual gross rate by the ratio of months worked divided by 12. This adjusted value is used exclusively for tax and deduction calculations. Gross pay per paycheck remains based on the full annual gross rate divided by pay frequency.
Working pay periods are defined as pay frequency multiplied by the ratio of months worked divided by 12. When seasonal mode is not enabled, working pay periods equal the selected pay frequency.
Pre-tax deductions are calculated next. The 401(k) contribution equals the tax base annual income multiplied by the 401(k) percentage. Health insurance deductions equal the per-paycheck health amount multiplied by working pay periods. If public employee status is enabled, a PERS contribution equal to 7.9 percent of tax base annual income is applied. The W-4 Step 4(b) deduction amount is added directly. These values are summed as total pre-tax deductions.
Federal taxable income equals tax base annual income minus total pre-tax deductions. The federal standard deduction corresponding to the selected filing status is subtracted, and progressive federal tax brackets defined in the code are applied to compute annual federal income tax.
Montana taxable income equals tax base annual income minus total pre-tax deductions minus the Montana standard deduction defined for the selected filing status. Montana income tax is calculated using a two-tier structure: income up to a fixed bracket limit is taxed at 4.7 percent, and income above that limit is taxed at 5.9 percent.
Social Security tax is calculated as 6.2 percent of tax base annual income, subject to a fixed annual wage cap. Medicare tax is calculated as 1.45 percent of tax base annual income with no cap.
Extra withholding is converted into an annual amount based on working pay periods and added to either federal tax or Montana tax depending on the selected target.
Annual taxes and deductions are divided by working pay periods to determine per-paycheck values. Net pay per paycheck equals gross pay per paycheck minus per-paycheck taxes and minus per-paycheck deductions. Net pay is constrained to a minimum value of zero.
Commute cost per paycheck is calculated using the fixed formula: daily miles multiplied by 5, multiplied by 0.18, multiplied by 52, divided by pay frequency. This value is subtracted from net pay to compute a separate real net pay value.
Results and Metrics Explained
Gross Pay: Annual gross rate divided by pay frequency.
Federal Withholding: Federal income tax allocated to a single paycheck.
Montana State Tax: Montana income tax allocated to a single paycheck.
Social Security Tax: Payroll tax equal to 6.2 percent of taxable income, limited by an annual wage cap.
Medicare Tax: Payroll tax equal to 1.45 percent of taxable income.
401(k) Contribution: Pre-tax retirement contribution calculated as a percentage of tax base annual income.
PERS Contribution: Fixed 7.9 percent retirement contribution applied to tax base annual income when public employee status is enabled.
Health Insurance: Pre-tax health insurance deduction applied on a per-paycheck basis.
Post-Tax Deductions: Deductions applied after taxes on a per-paycheck basis.
Net Pay: Gross pay minus all taxes and deductions for one paycheck.
Real Net Pay: Net pay minus estimated commute cost per paycheck.
Interpreting the Calculation Output
Higher gross pay values increase all percentage-based tax and deduction components. Increasing months worked increases the tax base used for tax calculations without changing per-paycheck gross pay. Increasing pay frequency reduces per-paycheck values while preserving annual totals. Increasing deduction or withholding inputs increases total deductions and taxes in numerical terms.
Assumptions and Calculation Limits
Federal and Montana tax brackets and standard deductions are fixed estimates defined in the code. Montana income tax uses a two-rate structure with a fixed bracket threshold. Social Security tax applies only up to a fixed annual wage limit. Seasonal adjustments affect tax calculations but do not alter gross pay per paycheck. Commute cost is estimated using a fixed per-mile constant. Net pay values are constrained to be non-negative.
Estimation Disclaimer
All results are produced using fixed constants, simplified tax logic, and explicit formulas defined in the code. Actual payroll calculations may differ due to employer-specific rules, benefit structures, or statutory changes. Outputs represent numerical estimates rather than official payroll results.
